God Guides Our Steps

One of the most comforting truths about following Jesus is knowing that He goes before us – aligning our steps long before we ever realize it.

Before my parents were ever invited to serve as translators on Camp Sonshine’s Mexico trip, God was already at work. Just months earlier, my uncle, my dad’s brother, had moved to a small community near Mezcales, Mexico. He worked as an Uber driver and a property caretaker. When my parents were considering saying “yes” to the trip, they had no idea that family would already be waiting there.

That first year, my uncle and other family members happened to be visiting. They ended up helping pickup the team from the airport, help the team run errands, translating, and serving in countless ways. What seemed like coincidence was really God’s divine coordination.

Since then, my uncle has continued to serve as our local “guide.” He helps arrange transportation, assists our team while we’re there, and has become a trusted friend to our mission. Last year, we met his baby boy, Gabby, who was like another team member – bringing laughter and joy to everyone.

Every time I think about this connection, I’m reminded of Proverbs 16:9: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

God knew exactly what He was doing when He placed our family in that area of Mexico. What looked like an ordinary move became part of a bigger plan to bring light and hope to a community – and to deepen our family’s connection to God’s mission.

Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

I continue to pray that God uses our team to make an eternal impact – not just in the lives of the children we serve, but also in my uncle’s life and his family’s story. I trust that God’s timing and His plans are always perfect.

As I look back at my journey serving the Lord through the ministry of Camp Sonshine, I see that I went through a lot of growth in staying obedient to God in big and small ways. So…these reflection questions are for YOU!

  • Where can you look back and see how God has aligned your steps – even when you didn’t understand it at the time?
  • Is there a “coincidence” in your life that might actually be God’s divine timing at work?
  • How can you stay faithful and obedient today, trusting that God is guiding your path?
  • Who in your life might be impacted by your obedience to follow God’s leading?
